\Designed to serve as an introduction to the fundamental concepts, theories, and treatment approaches of James F.Masterson, M.D., this book is divided into two parts: a presentation of the body of his work, and an accompanying Workbook, in the form of a questionnaire, that will enable the practitioner to apply the skills he or she has studied. The combination of the two formats provides both a clear and a concise summary of Dr. Masterson's groundbreaking work and an unusual and intriguing way to enhance the learning process for the reader. The body of the work is the subject of Dr. Masterson's 14 previous books and numerous articles. Read chronologically, these books illustrate the evolution of his theories of the Disorders of the Self (personality disorders), from their theoretical underpinnings to a treatment approach tailored to the specific needs of each disorder. Starting with his innovative work with the Borderline adolescent, moving on to the Borderline adult, and then to the Narcissistic and Schizoid Personality Disorders, his work has been a living thing, incorporating new developmental research, new research into the neurobiology of the brain, and new treatment approaches. However, owing to their evolutionary nature, nowhere is there one source to which a therapist can go to gain an understanding of the basic tenets of the theories and clinical contributions. This book, written by members of the current faculty of the Masterson Institute, and by Dr. Masterson himself, aims to address this gap, providing the reader with a clear summary of the pertinent developmental theory and the evolution of the Masterson Approach; a definition of the fundamental concepts; a discussion of differential diagnosis; the etiology and treatment of the Borderline, Narcissistic, and Schizoid Disorders; the role of trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder; and countertransference. It will not discuss in great detail all the complications and nuances of the work - the reader is directed to Dr. Masterson's earlier books for more in-depth material - but rather, its purpose is to simplify, clarify, and integrate. The reader will be able to take from this book a theoretical understanding of the Disorders of the Self and will gain new skills to address two of the crucial tasks in the psychotherapy of these disorders. The therapist will understand, and be able to convert, transference acting out to transference and therapeutic alliance. He or she will also be able to identify the working-through stage and learn how to manage it so that the patient is able to stay in treatment and work through the painful affects against which he or she has been defending. The companion to the text, the Workbook, utilizes a multiple-choice format designed to enhance learning in a variety of ways. Going over the questions is an educational process in itself, since it serves to emphasize the important points in each chapter, while underscoring aspects the reader might not otherwise have picked up. The questions vary from theory to practice, and often utilize examples of diagnostic considerations, interventions, patient responses, and follow-up therapist interventions. These exercises then enable the therapist to put into practice, to try out, the material presented in the first part of the book. He or she thus will learn how to differentiate among a confrontation, a mirroring interpretation of narcissistic vulnerability, and an interpretation of the Schizoid dilemma, and will learn when and where such interventions are appropriate in moving the treatment ahead. Once the reader has completed the questionnaire, he or she will have taken important steps in mastering material that has been demonstrated countless times to change the course of how he or she practices the art of psychotherapy. Ultimately, we hope that this step will be the first in a journey that will enhance both understanding and practice\. Anne R.Lieberman, L.C.S.W.
